How to link the TAQ and IBES databases
Linking Method
The best method of linking the TAQ and IBES databases is through the use of the CUSIP. A CUSIP number is a unique 9-digit identification number assigned to all stocks and registered bonds in the United States and Canada. In comparison to the ticker, the CUSIP is a more reliable identifier. While tickers can be reused over time, CUSIPs cannot be reused.
TAQ adds additional characters to its CUSIP as described in the WRDS Overview of TAQ. Therefore, when linking by CUSIP to IBES make sure to use only the first 8 characters of the TAQ CUSIP.
If you choose to link using tickers rather than CUSIP, we recommend you use the "Official Ticker" in IBES (not the IBES Ticker). Note the examples below.
The following is an example showing entries in IBES and TAQ having the ticker "TTT":
IBES, 2 match(es) found
Company Name | Official Ticker | CUSIP | IBES Ticker Symbol | Start Date |
---|---|---|---|---|
TELECOM-USA | TTT | 87928C10 | SOUT | 19881215 |

TAQ, 1 match(es) found
Company Name | Ticker Symbol | CUSIP |
---|---|---|
THERMO TERRATECH INC | TTT | 883598104001 |
The correct match is IBES CUSP 88359810 with TAQ CUSIP 883598104001.
